How to Prepare for a Mobile Mechanic Visit at Home or Work

A mobile appointment works best when the mechanic can identify the vehicle, reach it safely, reproduce the concern when appropriate, and understand what has already been repaired. This checklist helps prevent avoidable delays.

Start with a safe, usable work location

Whenever possible, park on firm, level pavement away from moving traffic, sprinklers, standing water, soft ground, steep grades, and active loading areas. Confirm that the property owner, workplace, apartment community, or parking facility allows on-site vehicle service.

Leave enough room around the vehicle for doors, a jack, tools, and parts. A garage-height restriction, locked gate, assigned-space rule, or vehicle blocked by another car should be discussed before arrival.

Send complete vehicle information

  • Year, make, model, mileage, engine when known, and VIN
  • License plate or a clear description when several vehicles are present
  • Exact address, unit, gate instructions, parking level, and best phone number
  • Whether the keys and wheel-lock key are available
  • Whether the vehicle can start, shift, roll, or be moved safely

Write the symptom as a timeline

Describe what the vehicle does, when it began, what conditions make it better or worse, and what happened immediately before it started. Include warning lights, sounds, smells, leaks, weather, recent fuel, jump starts, maintenance, collision, flooding, towing, and previous repair attempts.

Photos of the dashboard, leak location, tire or wheel, and vehicle position can help prepare the visit. A parked-vehicle video may preserve an intermittent sound. Avoid deleting codes or disassembling parts unless asked.

Gather records and parts information

Have recent invoices, maintenance history, diagnostic reports, and warranty information available. If parts were already purchased, send the brand and part number before the appointment; customer-supplied parts may affect fit, warranty, and the work that can be accepted.

Prepare the work area

  • Move pets and children away from the vehicle and tools.
  • Remove valuables or cargo that blocks the battery, spare tire, rear seats, trunk, or engine access.
  • Provide the keys and disable any scheduled remote-start event.
  • Tell the mechanic about alarms, air suspension, aftermarket electronics, wheel locks, or known hazards.
  • Keep a clear path available if weather requires the vehicle to be repositioned.

Confirm authorization and the next step

Ask what the initial visit covers, whether there is a diagnostic charge, what approval is needed before additional work, and how parts or follow-up work will be handled. The FTC recommends asking for a clear estimate and understanding the condition, parts, and anticipated labor before repair work proceeds.
